Reading comprehension - tips with difficult texts
  • don’t understand a word?
    • Is this word a verb, an adjective, a noun, etc.?
    • Does this word have a positive/negative/neutral meaning?
    • Do I know a part of this word?
  • don’t understand a structure?
    • Divide the sentence into smaller pieces
  • use the context: what's happening? who's speaking? where and when? does my interpretation make any sense in that context?
  • you can often disregard adjectives
  • look for word pairs: confident and imperturbable
Resources for practising reading comprehension
  • Lingro: type in any website in English and you will be able to click on unknown words and get a dictionary definition in English! Super useful for building new vocabulary!
  • Englishpage.com Reading Room: lots of free online newspapers, magazines and books.
  • Abitreenit: all the matriculation exams, along with the correct answers, from the past eight years.
