Tips


  • vocabulary affects your
    • essay (max 99p): a mistake-free essay is NOT worth 99p -> you need a broad range of vocabulary to even hit 80p
    • LC (max 90p): you hear but don’t understand - tough luck
    • RC (60-70p): you can read but don’t understand - tough luck
  • the grammar and vocabulary section in the matriculation exam is used to separate the excellent from the very best
  • it will test vocabulary and structures you haven’t met before
    • ultimately tests the flexibility and creativity of your English
    • “I didn’t know this word can be used this way, but because I know this, this and this, I’m able to guess that the meaning must be something like this here.”
  • vocabulary themes are similar to those we see in this course and all of your course books
    • STUDY EACH COURSE BOOK BEFORE THE MATRICULATION EXAM.
    • naturally, all the words are not to be found in your course books
  • 2.1 Multiple-choice questions
    • choose the best word / choose the correct structure / choose the most idiomatic usage
    • First read the whole sentence/paragraph without looking at the alternatives. Think about what’s missing! 
    • Then look at the options. What does each word mean? How would you use it?
    • Which meanings apply? What is there in the sentence you must acknowledge? e.g. tense, preposition, plural/singular forms...
  • 2.2. Productive grammar & vocabulary
    • brutal: no mistakes of any kind are accepted
    • “atleast” for “at least” -> 0p
    • “unbelievably difficult” for “the unbelievably difficult” -> 0p
    • usually only max 15 points -> important if you’re aiming high!
